Parameters - The Art of Keeping Water

Tests, tests and more tests...

What initially drew me into the aquarium hobby were freshwater Caridina shrimp. I was star stuck by their exotic patterns and didn't do my research into their care requirements. As a result of my ignorance, my first try was an incredible failure (RIP 😔 🦐). After this, I knew I had to figure out exactly what went wrong and how I could prevent it in the future.

While watching some videos on shrimp keeping, I stumbled upon a tip that changed how I perceive everything in this hobby. It went something like this:

"We're not keeping shrimp, we're really keeping water."

Caridina shrimp require strict water parameters and are incredibly sensitive to sudden change. Since then, I've learned where my parameters should be (dKh, Gh, Ph, etc). I took tests and adjusted. Now I have absolutely no problem keeping my shrimp happy and healthy!

Coral is very similar to the sensitive dwarf shrimp. The key to a thriving reef tank is within-range parameters and stability. There is no exact science as to what parameters will work for you, but stability is what you should strive for above perfect test results. Below ⬇️ is what what works for us at Frag Rack SD.
